Onawa Lake is 1344 acres with a max depth of 76 feet it also has a public boat ramp and has excellent fishing for Trout and Salmon. Onawa Lake is also open to ice fishing.
Onawa is just off the Moosehead Trail in Elliotsville Maine. Onawa Lake is the pride of Elliottsville and is surrounded by much beauty, Borestone Mountain, Barren Mountain, Big Benson Mountain and the famous Onawa Trestle.
Onawa: The word is Chippawa meaning awaken. Legend says that an Indian girl, Onawa committed suicide at the lake site and is buried there. Others say it was arbitrarily selected from Longfellow's poem Hiawatha.
